How successful was Philip IIââ¬â¢s foreign policy? Essay
Throughout Philip IIââ¬â¢s reign there were regular substantial occurrences outside he monarchia which forced him to implement some kind of foreign policy. When assessing how successful Philipââ¬â¢s foreign policy was it is important to acknowledge the aim of foreign policy seem to be in line with the traditional Hapsburg aims of keeping his land and passing them on intact, whilst adding to them if possible. In line with these aims Philip seems to have achieved a moderate amount of success in the first half of his reign adding Portugal to his lands and eliminating the Turks as a threat, however these successes are seriously undermined by his later failures in England and France The area of foreign policy where Philip seemed to achieve the most success was in his exploitation of the political situation in Portugal which led to Portugal being added to Philipââ¬â¢s monarchia. Portugal was already in a fragile state after the death of King Sebastian in 1578 the throne of Portugal had been given to his sick and aged Uncle Henry due to Sebastian having no children. This left many worries over who would be Henryââ¬â¢s successor and eventually by 1580 Philip was King of Portugal. Philipââ¬â¢s was successful in Portugal due to his two pronged policy of diplomacy and bribery along with the dispatching of Granville, one of his closest advisors to cultivate merchants of Lisbon who already were closely identified with Philip due to loans from the crown. This detailed and precise approach successfully ensured the withdrawal of Catrina ââ¬â Philipââ¬â¢s main rival in Portugal. Furthermore despite the crowning of Don Antonio as King of Lisbon, Philip was very successful in invading due to his awareness of Portugalââ¬â¢s army being depleted from expeditions to Morocco. Another area of Philipââ¬â¢s foreign policy where he achieved a high amount of success is his neutralisation of the Turks as a threat in the Mediterranean. Since the early 16th century the Turks had been attempting to expand their empire into Europe, forcing Philip to react. However despite later success, at first Philip was very unsuccessful against the Turks due to surprise assaults from the Turkish fleet along with blockades and poor weather. On the other hand, Philip made these early setbacks irrelevant in 1571 when alongside the Holy League he successfully defeated the Turks in Lepanto. This was seen as making Philipââ¬â¢s foreign policy particularly successful due it being seen as the greatest victory for the Christian empire, and thus had a huge religious impact. However, Philipââ¬â¢s greatest success when dealing with the Turks seems to be the negotiating of a truce in 1578. Despite the negative repercussions at the time involved with Philip putting his own problems before religion, the truce was highly successful as it allowed Philip to have little need for substantial military involvement in the Mediterranean, allowing him to move his armies further north in order to deal with the Netherlands and also his aspirations in France and England. This truce can be seen as having a negative impact on Philipââ¬â¢s prestige due to the agreement being a sign that he had backed down and was inspired for fighting for Catholicism as his title ââ¬Ëchampion of Catholicismââ¬â¢ would suggest. However, its political benefits easily outweigh the impact it has on Philipââ¬â¢s prestige and overall was one of Philipââ¬â¢s most successful decisions in his foreign policy. One area where Philip achieved little success was in the last 15 years of his reign where he seemed to change his foreign policy to being that of an aggressive imperialist, this appeared to be due to the fact that he spread his armies to thinly, fighting on three fronts at once in the 1590ââ¬â¢s. Problems with England began through Elizabethââ¬â¢s fears of England being turned Catholic as she could see what was happening in the Netherlands. These fears led to Elizabeth signing the treat of Nonesuch with rebels in the Netherlands, providing them with money and soldiers. In response Philip ordered the Armada to invade England in 1588 and despite this limiting English interference in Netherlands it was fairly unsuccessful due to Philipââ¬â¢s plan being highly complicated, furthermore the two fleets he sent had no co-ordination between them, and the as the Spanish fleet did not possess heavy artillery it was outgunned by the English. Philip did launch two more Armadaââ¬â¢s in 1596 and 1597, however these achieved even less success due to weather and didnââ¬â¢t even reach England, furthermore these crippled Spain financially due to the sheer amount of money each Armada cost to construct. Similarly in France Philip achieved little success and moreover due to his actions in France he actually contributed to the success of the Netherlands revolt. After many years of civil war and attempted interventions by Philip to turn France Catholic, Henry of Navarre, an anti Spanish protestant was crowned King of France. In response Philip ordered the transferral of troops from the Netherlands to attack France in a bid to claim the thrown for his daughter Elizabeth of Valois. Despite Henry becoming a Catholic, Philipââ¬â¢s attack on France was highly unsuccessful and led to his third bankruptcy in 1596 and the removal of troops from the Netherlands during vital points of the revolt stopped victory against the rebels. Overall Philips foreign policy seemed to be successful early on in his reign due to him being defensive and reactive up to 1584 as it gained him Portugal and eliminated the threat of the Turks. However after 1584 Philip seemed to change to being an aggressive imperialist possibly due to the fact he wanted to leave behind some kind of impact as he realised he would not have long left as King, however this was unsuccessful as he tried to do to much in a short period of time, leaving his armies spread too thinly without enough equipment due to his mounting financial problems.

Success of any business is dependent on the management policies applied by the organization that is operating that specific business. If the policies are only person oriented or productions oriented, then the objectives can not be achieved successfully but if both of the entities are taken into consideration while making policies, then the objectives are achieved efficiently and the business becomes profitable. A business is said to be profitable and successful when it provides profit and benefits in return of the investment done by the owner of that specific business. Final - Essay Example At one point he gets to see the hall in a repainted form and more colorful. This gift is what makes him excel in his career as a blacksmith. He takes time to be precise in what he makes; this is because he gets to see things for what they really are and not what one is used to seeing. His journeys through fairyland bring out a sense of enlightenment. When he visits fairyland he gets to visit another realm not so far apart from reality and gets to see it in their eyes. He thus gets a fresher and refined view of reality when he is teleported back to it. The question of space and time also arises with the flow of the fairy tale. It is not said how long Smith takes in his travels through this unknown land; not in terms of hours, days nor years. It seems that the time he spends in this other unknown land does not heavily affect the time in the real world. With this advantage, Smith takes his time sometimes even ages studying features of this enchanted world, a tree or even a leaf with an intention of gaining greater knowledge in the understanding of things, some of these which seemed quite strange. The perilous moments Smith gets to experience are but a representation of what he had to go through to better his skills, to get to see what he had to see thus bring the knowledge back to reality where it yielded productive results. The story of the Smith of Wootton major can be taken as an allegory of the autobiography of its writer Tolkien. In this allegory he takes the Smith to be him, privileged to get the gift of artistic works in terms of words. He uses Wootton Major and fairyland as a comparison to the real world and the world of art, literature and book writing. The characterââ¬â¢s journey through fairyland are but a representation of his struggle and experience in his field of work and what he could manage to bring forward to his readers(the real world). Finally he ends his allegory by making the main character Smith to pass down his star to the

Business and Management Research Methodology Essay
Business and Management Research Methodology - Essay Example scheduling the research workload and activities over a stipulated period and being flexible enough to make alterations in it when problems occur; vii. constructing and sustaining the research argument through a long document without resorting to long descriptions that are not embedded in the structure of the argument; viii writing and understanding the purpose of an introduction, a conclusion and an abstract for an academic document; ix writing clearly and imaginatively, and with a sense of authority; and x. using an appropriate referencing system. In order to conduct research in terms of the above mentioned requirements, the work involved may include: the development of an appropriate and interesting research topic; reading the relevant and other appropriate literature; specifying the method adopted for the research; collection or selection of the required data; analysis and interpretation of the data and finally writing up the dissertation as the end product. Deciding on the research topic takes a good deal of time, thought and discussion. In deciding on it, the best help is discussion with the research guide and other faculty members, one's colleagues, journal articles which may point out 'further areas of research', doctoral thesis reading which would give ideas of extending or disagreeing with the thesis propounded in the research thesis. The preliminary reading will not only be useful for choosing the topic but will also be helpful for writing a literature review for the project later on. So careful notes should be kept at every stage. Readings can include article summaries from Abstracts. Label the notes so that somebody else could read and understand them. This should mean that the researcher too, understand them when they are read again. A research statement turns the original ideas into something that can be researched. (Kumar 1996) Research Project After the preliminary readings, the research a proposal has to be formulated. A good way to prepare a research project is to include the categories of the research proposal as the project itself. There should be a proposed title or an initial short statement about what is proposed to be done. The introduction could be shorter than in the research thesis. But it should explain: why is this work is being done what problems are being investigated what questions will the researcher ask what other research is relevant to the work The methodology may be described, but it could be tentative if, at this stage a final decision about the methods of investigation and analysis would not have been made. But describe a range of possibilities that are being considered and how the information collected will be analyzed. A research proposal should also include a rough timetable as to when the different stages of the work are planned to be carried out. Timetable the Research and Report The researcher will have to be able carry out the research work and write it up by the deadline indicated in the

Legislative and Executive Branches - Assignment Example ââ¬Å"the executive action that would offer real legal status to the immediate family of US citizens and permanent residents.â⬠2 The senator has argued that the Senate Republicans should focus on revoking the 2014 order and allow the 2012 plan to remain intact. On the other hand, the Presidency has drawn a red line on the two executive actions by warning that the President will veto any legislation sent to him that seeks to topple the orders. The tussle over the executive order is taking place on a legislation to finance the Department of Homeland Security whose funding ends on February 27.3 I think President Obama needs to consult the Republicans on the issue of the executive actions. The issue of immigrants affects every American and it is a matter of national importance. Both the Republicans and the Democrats need to sit on a negotiation table and make a way forward on how to tackle the issue of immigrants. There are very many illegal immigrants in America who found themselves in the country because of their parentsââ¬â¢ choice and circumstances. The negotiators must balance the rights of the migrants and the interest of the

Nature of capitalism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Nature of capitalism - Essay Example Capitalism is highly accepted in modern society so it is hard to understand its unethical effects in the society. It can be observed only with correspondence to other societies who does not have a capitalist based economic system. Capitalism can lead growth and help in nationââ¬â¢s development but it has several adverse affects according to studies by professionals. A capitalist based society can lead to unfair rights to citizens and hence it creates imbalance in the society. According to a leading philosopher Karl Marx, means of production should not be owned privately as it gives unfair amount of power to capitalists. The owner of means of production can suppress other individuals with low power and end of being rulers. This observation of Karl Marx has significant importance as it is clearly visible in the economic system of modern society. Capitalism leads to less rights and importance to ordinary citizens compared to high profile citizens. This type of unfair rights and inequality is not a very good picture in the modern society. There is an important observation taken from the theory of one of the founders of capitalism, Adam Smith. According to Adam, capitalism is beneficial to everyone in a society that rises from a profit making motive and selfishness. This argument is sufficient enough to show that capitalism is unethical for the society. The moral value in a society goes for a toss with rise of capitalism and society gets divided into two parts the upper class and the lower class (Cudd and Holmstrom 66). This kind of division is not supportive for moral values and ethics in the modern society and in turn leads to inflation, loss of jobs, insufficient workers compensation. In a capitalistic society there is less influence of Government. In addition to this, less-efficient workers lose their jobs without proper c ircumstances. Growing power in hands of capitalists is not good for middle and lower class people in any situation.
